Abstract

830,489. Tanks. BINMORE, J. M. June 30, 1958 [July 11, 1957], No. 21968/57. Class 69 (1). In a floating roof for a volatile-liquid storage tank provided with means for sealing the annular space between the peripheral wall 2 of the tank and of the roof 11, the portion of the sealing means adapted to bear peripherally on the inner face of the wall of the tank comprises a pair of sealing rings 3, 4 of flexible material presented by a carrier ring and adapted in use, to lie interspaced one above the other. The sealing means consists of a series of rectangular panels 1 of flexible material such as synthetic rubber or polyvinyl chloride moulded to provide, when connected together the two sealing rings 3, 4. The rings 3, 4 are urged into contact with the tank walls by pantograph mechanisms 19, 20 which are spring- loaded by tension springs 21 so that the mechanisms are constrained to lengthen. Each mechanism at one end is pivotally attached to the carrier ring at 23 and is attached at its other end to the outer peripheral wall of the floating roof at 22. Secondary members carrying rollers 24 at opposite ends are adapted to engage the wall 2 and carrier ring. Each panel is provided with two outer pantographic mechanisms arranged vertically 19 (Fig. 3), and the intermediate one is arranged horizontally 20,(Fig. 4). Flexible annular upper and lower diaphragms 16, 12 are provided for sealing the space between the panel 1 and the peripheral wall of the roof.
