A gas holder has a floating piston which comprises straight frame-pieces 5-8 and 23 and straight rafters 1-4 which are rigidly joined at points 16-20 lying on a surface of revolution, such as a cone, sphere or paraboloid, so as to form concentric polygonal frames which are covered by flat plates 10-13 rigidly attached to the frame-pieces and rafters. The attachment of the parts may be by riveting, bolting or welding and some or all of the flat plates may be sub-divided and reinforced by a stiffening- member or members. The centre of the piston may be covered by a flat plate 14 or be formed as a manhole and the outer periphery may have curved outer pieces shaped to form a circle or ellipse. To bring the outer frames 23 or curved pieces into a vertical plane, the outer ends of the peripheral plates 10 may be bent to lie horizontal. For guiding the piston, rollers 26, 27 may be provided on a frame 24 and, for sealing it, lubricated packing-rings 28 may be pressed against the wall 15 of the holder by a counterweight 32 and a flexible membrane 29 may be attached between the sealing-rings and a bracket 25 on the frame 24. In a modification of the sealing means, a flexible membrane can lie against a fender fixed on the periphery of the piston and a telescoping fender located between the inner fender and the gasholder wall 15.
