Abstract

830,356. Hatch covers. SHORT BROS. Ltd. Sept. 19, 1956, No. 28674/56. Class 113. A ship's hatch cover is adapted to be lifted and to be displaced in a direction parallel to a pair of walls of the hatch coaming. The hatch cover 1 has at least three mountings 11a attached to it by bolts 12. Each mounting has a nut 13 welded to it through which screws the jack 14. At the bottom of each jack there is a roller 17, grooved to run on rail 22 of deck 2, mounted in a fork member 18 which has a collar 19 rotatable relative to the head 20 of the jack. The hatch cover has a series of stiffeners 27 on the top, and a solid bar 6 welded to the bottom which enters the packing material 4, when in the closed position. Wing nuts on screws 9 fit slots in the hatch cover for fastening down. To remove the cover the fastenings 9 are released, the jacks oerated to lift the cover which is then pushed along the rails. Different types of jacks may be used, for example, one having a lateral projecting stub which is inserted in the recess of a mounting fixed to the cover or a ratchet type jack. Various arrangements of jacks may be employed, provided they support the cover in a substantially stable equilibrium, for example two jacks either side of the cover, two on one side and one in the other or one on each side and one in the middle of a third side.
