Abstract

830,305. Inlet manifolds; spray carburetters. ACF INDUSTRIES Inc. Dec. 23, 1957, No. 39856/57. Classes 7(2) and 7(3) Manifold branches 37, 38 having common side walls lead to cylinder banks 1, 2 from an air box A, their connections 47, 48 to which are at the side thereof remote from the respective bank to allow sufficient branch length for dynamic supercharging. The box A is fed from an air intake passage or conduit D having a manual throttle and air and fuel metering means as described in Specification 807,519 controlling valved nozzles 117 injecting fuel into the branches, which may be of uniform crosssectional area throughout or of venturi shape. The nozzles 117 of each bank are mounted in a single aluminium casting B with a cast aluminium cover C. Ducts 146... 149 in each cover C connect datum pressure orifices 140, 142, 145 of the fuel metering means to the spaces above diaphragms 110 which actuate the nozzle valves. The orifice 145 may be dispensed with, the orifices 140, 142 acting as inlet and outlet respectively and the cylinder banks being connected in series. Ducts 164...167 in each casting B connect fuel supply spaces below the diaphragms 110 to whichever of two supply connection bosses 151, 153 of the corresponding cover C is in use. The air conduit D may be located beside the engine and connected by a pipe to the box A. Reference is made to the substitution of a carburetter for the conduit D, and to application of the invention to engines with one cylinder bank.
