Abstract

808,266. Spray carburetters. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Aug. 29, 1957 [Sept. 10, 1956], No. 27215/57. Class 7(3) The injection nozzles 74 injecting into the intake passages adjacent the intake valves are mounted in blocks 58 of heat insulating material, having hollow interiors 60 connected to atmosphere. The air intake conduit 48 and fuel metering mechanism 52 of a V-engine form a unit which is mounted in the space between the cylinder banks 10, and each nozzle block 58, which may be of thermosetting synthetic resin, contains a pair of nozzles 74, Fig. 3, feeding the intake passages 44 of adjacent cylinders. Each block 58 has a chamber 60 therein connected by a hose 68 to the intake conduit 48 and the nozzles 74 are held in position by a bracket 98 secured by the bolt 96 which bolts the block 58 into position in a recess in the wall of the intake manifold. The nozzles are supplied through pipes 54 with fuel under pressure which is sprayed through an orifice 86, the fuel jet passing through a space 82 connected to the chamber 60 and through a second orifice 90 into the nozzle outlet 88 leading to the intake passage. The air at atmospheric pressure in space 82 destroys the effect of intake pipe suction on the fuel jet and the orifices 90 are arranged so that the amount of air which flows therethrough is less than that required for idling. The hoses 68 from adjacent blocks 58 may be joined to a common pipe leading to the air intake 48.
