Abstract
829,367. Gang mowing machines. SHANKS & SON Ltd., A. May 14, 1958 [Feb. 19, 1957], No. 5584/57. Class 6(2). An attachment for coupling a gang of mowing (more particularly for mowing orchards) machines, to a vehicle comprises a rigid frame adapted to be mounted on the vehicle and a draft tube or bar slidably mounted in the frame transversely of the line of travel of the vehicle, means for coupling mowing machines to both end portions of the tube or bar for towing in front of and on either side of the line of travel of the vehicle, a pair of extension frames projecting laterally from the first mentioned frame, and means for coupling mowing machines to the extension frames for towing on either side of the vehicle and behind the first-mentioned machines. As shown, a rigid frame 1 is formed in two readily detachable parts 1a, 1b the part 1b being coupled to the chassis of the tractor 2. A horizontal draft tube 11 is slidable manually or mechanically on rollers journalled for rotation in brackets on the frame 1a, each leading mowing machine 3, 4 being coupled by a universal joint 14 to a connecting bar 15 projecting from a sleeve 16 slidably mounted on the tube 11 and formed with a longitudinal slot 17 engageable by a key on the tube so as to prevent rotation of the sleeve on the tube. The tube 11 also has clamped thereto one end of a tube 18 the other end of which is bifurcated at 19 for engagement with a transverse bar 20 to which it is secured by a pin 21. When it is desired to shift the tube 11 to the right or to the left of the line of travel of tractor 2, the pin 21 is disengaged, the tube 11 is displaced in the desired direction and the pin 21 re-engaged with the tube 18 and one or other of the lugs 28 on the frame 1a. The frame part 1b carries a pair of horizontal equi-spaced tubes 23 projecting laterally from the tractor and providing sockets for the reception of adjustable extension frames 24 connected by universal couplings 25 to the frames of the respective machines 5, 6. The rear machines 7, 8 and 9 are coupled by a drawbar 27 to the axle casing 10.
