Abstract
Ferrous melts are de-sulphurized by the injection of comminuted calcium carbide in a stream of carrier gas followed by the injection of a gas free from calcium carbide. The gas free from calcium carbide may be the carrier gas used in the first stage. Calcium carbide having a particle size of 14 x 200 mesh may be used and the carrier gas may be nitrogen, argon, helium, hydrogen, or natural gas. A ladle of 500 lb. was blown for 1 to 2 minutes at a flow rate of 400 cubic ft. per hour during which 25 lb. of calcium carbide was added. With an after blow of 1 minute the sulphur content was reduced to 0.004%.
