Abstract

Stable aqueous dispersions are obtained by dispersing (a) a phenol-aldehyde (other than xylenol-aldehyde) resole and/or an epoxide resin and/or a furfuryl alcohol resin, such resin being not itself dispersible in an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol, and the epoxide resin and the furfuryl alcohol resin being still soluble in organic solvents, and (b) a xylenol-aldehyde resole or a mixture of xylenol and aldehyde, the weight ratio of (a) to (b) being 1 : 9 to 9 : 1, in (c) an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol and/or a water-soluble derivative p thereof. Phenols mentioned are phenol and cresol; aldehydes mentioned are formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and butyraldehyde. The epoxide resins are defined as reaction products of epichlorhydrin or other suitable chlorhydrins with polyhydric phenols (e.g. dihydroxydiphenyl - dimethyl methane, resorcinol or novolaks) or with polyhydric alcohols. Organic solvents for dissolving (a) and (b) include methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, butanol, methyl or ethyl acetate, acetone or mixtures thereof. Or reactive nonvolatile solvents may be used, e.g. furfuryl alcohol, furfural, aldol, and reaction products of acetaldehyde and formaldehyde provided they are still liquid. Derivatives of polyvinyl alcohol mentioned under (c) are partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetal (e.g. butyral, propional, valeral or acetal), partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate and the reaction product of polyvinyl alcohol with butyraldehyde sulphonic acid (or the Na or NH4 salts thereof). Optional additives include (i) fillers, e.g. silicon, silicon carbide, graphite, coke, silicon dioxide, quartz, titanium dioxide, barium sulphate, hardened phenol-aldehyde resins, polyvinyl chloride, polytetrafluorethylene, polytrifluorochlorethylene, polyisobutylene, or polyethylene; (ii) acid hardeners, e.g. 1 : 5-naphthalene disulphonic acid, paratoluene sulphonic acid, b -naphthaleneor paratoluene - sulphochloride, trichloracetic acid, maleic anhydride, hydrogen chloride, phosphoric or sulphuric acids; and (iii) chlorhydrins, e.g. 1 : 3-dichloropropanol, monochloropropanol, dichlorhydrin, 1 : 2-dichloropropanol, glycol chlorhydrin, epichlorhydrin or dichlorotertiary-isobutanol. Uses.-Application to floors, waste-water conduits or pits to give chemical and mechanical protection.
