Abstract
A hardenable resin, prepared, according to Claim 2 of the parent Specification, by condensing (1) an aldehyde, (2) a compound yielding a resin only with a free aldehyde, and (3) a reaction product of a phenol and a resinous oxygen-containing condensate of an aldehyde and an aromatic hydrocarbon, is mixed with a halogenhydrin. The products may be hardened in the cold by addition of a suitable hardening agent, and are suitable, if desired, in conjunction with fillers as puttying, plastering or coating masses or for making shaped articles. Halogenhydrins mentioned are ethylene chlorhydrin, mono-, di- or epi-chlorhydrin or dichlorbutylene oxide. Furfural may also be added. The examples use a resin prepared by heating phenol in presence of p-toluenesulphochloride with a condensate from naphthalene and paraformaldehyde. In Examples 2, 3, this resin is reacted with phenol and formaldehyde in presence of sodium sulphide, cooled, distilled to remove water and mixed with ethylene chlorhydrin. Addition of graphite mixed with dilute sulphuric acid gave a hardened product. In Example 4, sodium sulphite is used in place of sodium sulphide and furfurol is added in addition to the ethylene chlorhydrin.
