Abstract

Paper &c. is given high wet strength by incorporating 0.1 to 30 per cent of a polyether polyepoxide applied as an aqueous solution or emulsion together with a curing agent, the paper being dried and the polymer cured. The polymer may be a polyglycidyl polyether of a polyhydric alcohol or of a polyhydric phenol and may have an epoxy equivalent of 1.1 to 4 and a molecular weight of 300 to 1000. Curing agents may be polycarboxylic acids, e.g. citric, phthalic, oxalic, maleic, fumaric, phosphoric, boric, sulphonic or phosphonic acids, or perchloric or persulphuric acid, amino compounds, e.g. ethylene diamine, or inorganic salts, e.g. zinc, magnesium or copper fluoborate or potassium or copper persulphate. The epoxy polymers include, e.g., 1,4-bis-(2,3-epoxypropoxy) benzene, 4,41 - bis - (2,3 - epoxypropoxy) diphenyl ether, diglycidyl ether, ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether, polymers obtained by reacting a polyhydric phenol with, e.g., 4 to 8 mols. excess of epi- or di-chlorohydrin, or by reacting either of the last two compounds with a polyhydric alcohol in an acid medium and subsequently treating with an alkaline compound. In an example: (1) 150 parts of a polyepoxide polyether derived from glycerol, 7.5 of a polyethylene glycol monostearate and 150 of water were mixed together, and to the mixture were added 75 parts of a 5 per cent solution of partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, 400 of water and 100 of 10.8 per cent zinc fluoborate solution. Water was then added to give solutions of required percentages of resin for treating unbleached kraft paper.
