Abstract
827,318. Making turbine blades; extruding. WIGGIN & CO. Ltd., H. Feb. 17, 1958 [Feb. 27, 1957], No. 6598/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In the hot extrusion of a billet 1 of highmelting point metal, a pad 2 of more readily deformable metal is placed in front of the billet and graphite is used as a lubricant. In the extrusion of gas turbine and compressor blades, Fig. 2, the billet 1 may be an alloy of nickel and chromium or an alloy of nickel, chromium and cobalt and these alloys may include small quantities of aluminium and titanium; alternatively molybdenum-base or zirconium base alloys may be used. The pad 2 may be of nickel, copper-nickel alloy or mild steel and may be welded to the billet or deposited on the leading end from a welding rod. Graphite is applied to the face of the extrusion die and coats the metal passing therethrough. To reduce chilling the pad 2 is held out of contact with the die before extrusion pressure is applied by a wooden stick pushed through the die or by the ejector mechanism. The pad forms a coating which may produce a taper on the leading end of the extruded blade 5; this coating may be removed subsequently by machining or the coated leading end may be cut off. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 732,081.
