827,099. Seaming. DELTA WELDER CORPORATION. May 30,1958 [Aug. 21, 1957], No. 17402/58. Class 83 (4). A device for clinching an upstanding panel flange over a second panel flange, e.g. the edges of the inner and outer panels of an automobile door, comprises a stationary jaw 12 and a movable jaw 13 which are slidably and pivotally connected at their inner ends and to outer ends of which are secured a pair of dies 14 and 15, respectively, yielding means being provided for holding the jaws apart, and operating means for moving said movable jaw parallel and towards said stationary jaw. Linkage means for operating the movable jaw 13 includes a fixed arm 26 attached to the jaw 12 and an L-shaped arm 27, one leg of which is pivoted to the jaw 12 and the other to the piston-rod 32 of an hydraulic cylinder 29 pivoted to the fixed arm 26. The horizontal or folding movement of the jaw 13 is effected by a link 36 pivoted to the arm 27 and to the crank arm 39 of a cam 41 pivoted to the jaw 12. A recess 44 in the cam engages one arm of a ball-crank 49 pivoted in the jaw 12 the other arm of which is located in the jaw 13. The jaws are urged apart by a spring-loaded button 53 attached to the jaw 13. At the end of the folding movement the jaws are drawn together by means of a link 58 pivoted to the arm 27 at one end, the other end having a lost-motion connection with the jaw 13 at 63. Journal blocks 64 and 65 prevent undue shearing stresses on the pivot pins 28 and 59. The device may be used as part of a group of similar devices arranged in series so that a complete door can be seamed in one operation.
