Abstract
1,075,663. Seaming. BRITISH FEDERAL WELDER & MACHINE CO. Ltd. Sept. 8, 1965 [June 8, 1964], No. 23690/64. Addition to 958,672. Heading B3J. Clinching apparatus of the type in which the panels 4, 5 lie on a bed or cradle 3 and the bending-over operation and the clinching operation are performed in sequence by separate pre-forming and clinching members 17 and 10 is characterized in that the clinching member 10 is supported for movement by a parallelogram linkage 7, 8 and the preform member 17 is connected by a link arm 18 directly to one of the links 8 of the parallelogram linkage so as to constitute a toggle linkage by which the pre-form member is operated, so that during a first part of the advance movement of the clinching member 10 the pre-form member 17 is advanced to bend over the upstanding marginal flange 6 and is then withdrawn whereupon, during a second part of the advance movement of the clinching member 10 the bent-over flange 6<SP>1</SP> is clinched while the pre-form member 17 remains withdrawn. The clinching member 10 is lowered by hydraulic means 11. The link 8 may be adjustable in length and its pivoted connection with the link arm 18 may also be adjustable.
