Abstract

929,840. Seaming. BRITISH FEDERAL WELDER & MACHINE CO. Ltd., and T. F. TRIBE. March 11, 1960, No. 8719/60. Class 83 (4). A clinching tool comprising a member for folding over an upstanding flange of a sheet metal panel so that it is acutely inclined to the surface of the panel, a member for pressing the folded-over flange towards said surface and means for actuating the presser member is characterized in that the fold-over member is pivoted for movement towards the upstanding flange and the presser member is pivotally mounted for movement in a direction substantially at right angles to the direction of movement of the fold-over member and in that said members are mounted for adjustment to bring them to a position at which the direction of movement of the fold-over member is substantially at rightangles to the surface of the upstanding flange. To form a boot lid of V shape in section and having a pair of opposite parallel sides 10 and a pair of opposite converging ends 11, an outer panel 13 having an upstanding edge flange 15 and an inner panel 14 are held in a cradle by clamp 45 with an edge 17 of the panel 14 adjacent the flange 15. Clinching tools comprising a pivoted fold over member 18 and presser member 28 carried by parallel links 26, somewhat as described in Specification 928,229 to which reference is made, are then actuated for the two ends 11 so that the fold over members 18 bend the flange 15 approximately 45 degrees, being actuated by cams 23 on bars 25 carrying the presser members 28, and the presser members 28 then squeeze the bent-over flange on to the edge 17. The presser and fold-over members, for the ends 11 are of suitable V form. The presser members 28 are kept in this position to help the clamp 45 hold the panels while tables 21 pivoted at 30 and carrying the clinching tools for the sides 10 are swung into operative position adjacent the work by jacks 41 and the tools actuated to bend over the flange 15 on to the edge 17 along the sides 11. The positions of the tables 21 are governed by stops 42, 43 of which the stops 42, at least, are adjustable. The tools may be actuated by hydraulic pneumatic or electrically operated mechanical means. Specification 841,027 is referred to.
