Clinching apparatus of the type in which the panels lie on a bed or cradle and including a pre-form member, clinching being performed after the pre-forming operation, is characterized in that the pre-form member is brought to engage the upstanding marginal flange in such manner that during pre-forming said member transmits a thrust through the flange to the flanged panel to hold the portion of the panel which is next to said flange against the bed or cradle. A flange 9 on an outer panel 7 is partially bent over the margin 10 of an inner panel 8 by a pre-forming member 21, Fig. 1, carried by a beam 14 moved down by a jack 16. The member 21 has an inclined face 25 which engages the upper edge 29 of the flange 9 to urge it down and in. The member 21 is retracted, on continued downward movement of the beam 14, by engagement with inclined faces on fixed blocks 26. A clinching member 15 on the beam 14 completes the bending and presses and clinches the flange. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, a pre-forming member 21 pivoted to the machine frame at 33, is moved, by a cam 30 on a bar 13 carrying the beam 14, so as to swing down on to the flange 9, having a horizontal and a vertical component of movement when it engages the flange. Specifications 928,299 and 958,674 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 841,027.
