Abstract

1,157,942. Woodworking. WM. D. BOWERS LUMBER CO. 26 July, 1967 [27 July, 1966], No. 34440/67. Heading B5L. [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for making wall panel frames formed of studs 9, 10, Fig. 6, and end plates 11, 12 comprises two substantially parallel horizontally spaced conveyers 14, 16, a table 15 supported between the conveyers with its upper surface in the plane 40 of both conveyers whereby studs may be supported on the table and an end plate on each conveyer, abutment means 46 extending longitudinally of one conveyer for abutment by one of the end plates, clamping means 48 on the other conveyer for engaging the other end plate, means 51 for moving the clamping means towards the abutment means to urge the plates against the ends of the studs while they are secured together, and means 34, 36 to lower the table so that the assembled frame can be moved along the conveyers. The conveyer 16 consists of rollers 21 and conveyer 14 consists of rollers 17 and shorter rollers 26, the rollers being slightly inclined to the horizontal. The table is disposed between the conveyers and is movable by pneumatic cylinders 34, 36 between upper and lower positions. The abutment 46 is mounted above the conveyer 14, and the clamping means along the conveyer 16 and consists of plates 48 movable by pneumatic cylinders 51. The table has stops 56, 57 at one end for positioning a stud 9 with one end abutting an end plate 11 when the table is in its upper position, the end plate being positioned by the abutment 46. The other studs 10 are positioned on the table and the end plate 12 is then pressed by the clamping means 48 into engagement with the studs to hold the frame while it is secured together, for example by nailing. Thereafter the table is lowered to permit removal of the frame along the conveyers.
