Clinching apparatus of the type in which the panels lie upon a bed or cradle and the preforming operation and the clinching operation are performed in sequence by separate pre. forming and clinching members is characterized in that the pre-form member is connected to the clinching member by a toggle linkage so that during the first part of the downward movement of the clinching member the pre-form member is advanced to bend over the upstanding marginal flange and it is then withdrawn, whereupon, during the second part of the downward movement of the clinching member, the bent-over flange is clinched while the pre-form member remains withdrawn from the flange. A pre-forming member 21 pivoted at 23 to the machine frame is connected by a pivoted link 25 to a beam 15 connected by parallel links 12 to a pillar 11. As the beam 15 is lowered by the rod 17 of an hydraulic jack the member 21 is moved in to bend a flange 8 of an outer panel 7 over the margin 10 of an inner panel 9. On continued downward movement of the beam 17 the member 21 retracts and a clinching member 20 on the beam 15 presses on and clinches the bent-over flange.
