948,672. Welding by fusion. R. C. P. ARBELLA, [trading as RODOVERKEN SVENUNGSSON & CO.]. Dec. 9, 1961, No. 44151/61. Heading B3R. In a machine for welding horizontal seams of vertical cylindrical tanks, a vehicle 1 drivable around the tank P on the base or foundation 1a of the tank mounts a carriage 8 supporting one or more welding heads 8a and presses the carriage 8 against the wall P of the tank, the carriage 8 having guide means engaging grooves or seams in the wall P and/or engaging the base la of the tank. The machine may operate internally or externally of the tank. The carriage 8 has an upper pair of wheels 17 engaging the wall P and a lower pair 16 engaging a weld seam 19. One of the lower pair is driven by a motor synchronized with the motor driving the vehicle 1. A pushrod 5 connected by links 6 to the vehicle 1 and spring-loaded by a spring 7 is coupled to the carriage 8 by a resilient and universal connection 14. A link 20 is actuated by movement of the links 6 to steer the vehicle 1 to maintain it at a constant distance from the wall. In a modified form of carriage 8 the lower wheels 16a, Fig. 7, engage the wall and base of the tank. The plates of the wall may be joined by external manual welds 15, 30 prior to automatic welding. The upper part of the tank is assembled first and raised by jacks, and a row of plates are welded to the upper part. The assembly is again raised and another row of plates welded in position, the operation being repeated until the tank is complete. Specification 948,671 is referred to.
