Abstract

661,456. Tube expanders. METAL BOX CO., Ltd., and LYTOLLIS, J. July 5, 1950 [Oct. 24, 1949], No. 27298/49. Class 83 (iv). An apparatus for reforming rectangular can bodies flattened for transport comprises four mandrels disposed in pairs. Two mandrels 3 are fixed in a support 1 and have hinged thereto by members 8 two mandrels 6 connected by jointed levers 9, 10, the hinge-pin 11 of which engages a cam groove 19 in a load actuating member 17 pivoted to a fixed mandrel. The mandrels are disposed in one plane by manipulation of the member 17 and inserted in the can body. By swinging the member 17 the mandrels 6 are moved to restore the can body to rectangular shape. The levers 9, 10 are jointed to permit limited movement about the pin 11 and on reverse movement of the member 17 assume a V-formation to move the mandrels 6 towards each other to facilitate stripping. The apparatus may be powerdriven with the mandrels on a turret and the member 17 replaced by a cam.
