A sewing machine comprises a frame including a base 2 and a free arm 4 having an upper working surface, hinged flaps 21, 22, 23 connected to the frame and forming a case with the frame when folded thereagainst and a retractable shelf 7 connected to the base 2 by articulated means and displaceable between an upper position fitting round the upper working surface of the free arm 4 and a lower position for access to the free arm 4. In a first embodiment (Fig. 8) the flaps are hinged to the shelf 7 which is connected to the base 2 by lower walls 8, 9 each of which comprises two parts hinged together and 14 and 15, on a central longitudinal axis. On release of a catch (32) (Fig. 7, not shown) the end of a spring urged lever (36) raises the shelf 7 and the walls 8 may be held in their raised positions by arms (42) (Fig. 6, not shown) which .are secured to a transverse rod (39) which is rotatable by a knurled wheel (40) and are engageable with grooves in the ends of the walls 8. In a second embodiment (Fig. 12) the flaps are still pivoted to the shelf 7 but are pivoted upwardly from the lowered position of the shelf 7 to form a case for the machine. The shelf 7 is connected to the base by a scissors linkage on each side comprising two arms 46 pivoted at 48 and 49 to the base and shelf and at 50 and 53 to blocks slidable in grooves 52 and 55 of the base and shelf. The shelf is held in the raised and lowered positions by transverse pins 58 (Fig. 13) engageable with bores 59 or recesses 69 of the blocks and pivoted to levers 62 controlled by a cam 64 which is rotatable manually by a knurled wheel 67.
