Abstract

418,854. Vices. CHANCE BROS. & CO., Ltd., and HARDING, L. W., Glass Works, Smethwick, Birmingham. Aug. 19, 1933, No. 23195. [Class 61 (ii).] In an universal vice, one of a pair of pivotally connected knee members c, e is provided at one or both sides with a longitudinal slot t in which slides a pivot s secured to one end of a curved or other strut r pivoted at its other end to the other knee member. The lower knee member c turns upon a pivot b on a base a, the extent of the turn being indicated by a scale d on the pivot b and between the two knee members and headed bolts secured to the knee member c engage in a circular #-section slot in the base to ensure rigidity. A similar construction co-operates with a pivot k through which the upper knee member e supports a member j carrying a fixed jaw h. A screw q disposed within the member and operable from either end controls the movable jaw i which is slidably secured thereto by headed bolts engaging in slots in the member j. When the knee members are fully opened, as shown in Fig. 5, the jaw carrying member j can still be turned through 360‹. A scale g is provided on the pivot of the knee members and a vernier scale l indicates the position of the member j relatively to the upper knee member e.
