Abstract

826,760. Waveguide switches. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO. Ltd. July 16, 1957 [Oct. 8, 1966], No. 30605/56. Class 40(8). A coupling device comprises two high-frequency energy channels relatively movable through a position which they adopt once per cycle of movement, in which their ends are aligned opposite one another, and a metallic shutter on at least one of said channels operated by abutment means to open up the end of the channel when the said position is approached. In radar equipment, Fig. 1, a sample of the transmitted energy to be fed to an echo box enters the resonant aperture 3 in the aerial 1 and passes to a short length of waveguide 6 which has an open end 61, on a table 7 which rotates with the aerial system. The guide 6 carries two abutment pins 62, 63, and as it rotates passes with its end 61 close to the end of a guide 8; said end having a shutter 82 thereon. An abutment pin 91 projects from the box 9 when a solenoid therein is energized and pin 63 engages pin 91, and swings aside box 9 and shutter 82 so that guides 6 and 8 are coupled once per revolution of guide 6. The end of guide 8 is kept open by the pin 85, which is forced during the opening into the bend 861 in a spring 86, until the guides have passed the position of alignment when the pin 62 releases the spring 86. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), a cam 862 on the table 7 engages the pin 91 and controls the shutter movement. The coupling device may be located in the pedestal box of the radar equipment.
