Abstract

718,828. Waveguides. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and FISHER, F. J. Jan. 21, 1953 [Jan. 21, 1952], No. 1716/52. Class 40 (8). [Also in Group XL(c)] Two spaced couplings in a rectangular waveguide are adapted to transfer energy propagated in two different modes and are separated by a mode filter. The couplings, in the form of probes 7, 8, lie at right angles to each other and are disposed respectively at distances #/2 and # from the open end of the waveguide 1. They are excited respectively by waves propagated in the H 01 mode having their electric fields polarized in planes parallel to different sides of the waveguide. The mode filter 16, spaced #/4 from the probe 7, acts as a reflector for the energy associated with the probe 7 and as an attenuator for the energy associated with the probe 8. It comprises spaced parallel wires 17 attached to a frame 18 which is e'ectrically connected to the walls of the waveguide by fingers 23. Additional wires 19 lying directly behind wires 17 prevent spurious resonances behind the filter 16. The frame is adjustable along the guide in slots 21. The guide is terminated by an adjustable metal plunger 11 mounted upon a rubber disc 12 which is a close fit in the guide. Metal fingers 14 electrically connect the plunger to the guide. To prevent mismatch at the open end of the guide (which may be directed towards a reflector) inductive loading in the form of two wires 28 may be provided. The guide may be sealed by a mica window 24.
