Abstract

826,333. Joint-making packing. AMERICAN CAST IRON PIPE CO. March 18, 1958 [July 5, 1957], No. 8622/58. Class 122 (3). [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXVI] A compressible gasket, for use in a spigot and socket joint, comprises an annular body having a front end wall 25 perpendicular to the axis of the gasket and a rear end wall 26 slightly concave in form, an inner side wall for reception of the spigot comprising a sloped portion 27 extending rearwardly in an axially convergent direction and an axially extending portion 28, and an outer side wall including a first axially divergent portion 29, a radial shoulder-forming portion 30, a second axially divergent portion 31 and an axially extending portion 32. The inclination of the portion 29 to the axis of the gasket is greater than that of portion 31. The gasket is made of rubber of two different degrees of hardness, the part 13a being more resistant to compression and abrasion than the part 13b. Alternatively, the gasket is made of rubber of uniform hardness the front end thereof being provided with an external fabric reinforcement such as duck.
