Abstract

825,941. Launching aircraft. PALLAVICINO, C. Feb. 27, 1956 [Feb. 26, 1955], No. 5974/56. Class 4. In apparatus for launching aircraft ir order to shorten the land runway by releasably connecting aircraft by a hook to a cable winding on and off motorised drums to impart traction to the cable for launching, the cable extends along the entire runway and the drums on which the ends of the cable wind on and off are driven through couplings and speed changing transmissions from a motor, the latter, the drums, couplings and transmissions being housed underground of the runway. A traction cable 20 is wound on drums 21, 22 keyed to a common shaft 25 driven from a motor 23 through a hydraulic or friction coupling or/and a speed changing transmission 24. The drums are coned to ensure acceleration of aircraft C or D coupled to the cable 20, which is passed round a pulley 28 at the end of the runway opposite to the drums. A brake 26 is provided to retard the drums after launching and to facilitate take-off a flywheel 32 driven from a motor 29 may be clutched at 27 to the drums. The driving apparatus is housed in a casing mounted in a pit by buffer elements. In an alternative embodiment the drums are separately driven and mounted at each end of the runway with the cable extending between them.
