Abstract

825,925. Fabric composed of agglutinated threads. OLKEN, N. L. Jan. 18, 1956, No. 1676/56. Class 140. A non-woven fabric is made by producing a first array of substantially parallel strands as 1, 2, 3 extending along a cone-like surface at an angle # to the base of the " cone," producing a second array of similar strands as 6, 7, 8 extending along a " cone " at an angle of 180 degrees minus # to the base of the cone, applying adhesive to the arrays of strands and adhering the strands together at their crossing points. As shown, threads 1, 2, 3 . . . 6, 7, 8 . . . e.g. of cotton rayon, nylon, glass, from spools such as 14 on a spool carrier 20 are passed through apertures in a reed plate 24, so forming a cylinder of strands, and are then led slightly outwardly and through passages in projections 41 on a pick-up plate 30, the carrier 20, reed plate 24 and pick-up plate rotating as one unit. The strands are then engaged by hooks 64 on chain conveyers 56, 60 disposed at diametrically opposite positions of the plate 30, the speed of rotation of which is synchronized with the speed of the conveyers. The two crossing arrays of strands travel upwardly past a brush 13 fed with a quick-drying adhesive from a conduit 15 and between rollers 17, 19 to press the strands together. The resulting material is freed from the transporting hooks by stationary cams 21, 23 and passes over a delivery rollers 25. In a modification (Fig. 9, not shown), the reed plate 24 is omitted and each of the projections on the pick-up plate receive and guide three strands through radially spaced apertures, the pick-up hooks being mounted on the conveyer in groups of three, each hook engaging one strand as before.
