In a preferred embodiment (Fig. 6) the carriage comprises four tubes 36 comprising the manifolds clamped together by brackets 37, each tube being individually connected to a dye source and having one or more lead tubes 38 with dye-applying jets 39 formed along its length. Two of these carriages may be mounted back-to-back for reciprocation above the inclined plane or web passing therebeneath (Fig. 7, not shown). Transverse reciprocation of the carriage may be achieved by a rotating disc and eccentric pin mechanism (Fig. 4, not shown) or by providing each end of each tube 36 with a piston arrangement (Fig. 8, not shown). The apparatus reduces considerably the number of flexible tubes used to connect the individual dye sources with their dye applying jets.
