Abstract

A method of dyeing textile strands comprises moving the strands longitudinally past a plurality of sources of dye and simultaneously effecting relative lateral movement between the strands and the dye sources whilst applying dye from the sources. Apparatus, Fig. 1 (not shown), for performing the method comprises a support surface (64) for the strands, which are spread into a single flat sheet, the lateral position of which is varied by means of a reciprocating comb (36), and a plurality of engraved applicator rollers (98). The engraved portion of each roller is laterally displaced in relation to the preceding and succeeding rollers, and each roller (98) is biassed towards the support surface (64). In the preferred embodiment, the support surface is constituted by an endless resilient belt. A lateral reciprocating motion may be imparted to the belt to assist the random or repetitive application of a multiplicity of colours to the filaments of the strands. Subsequent to dyeing, the strands are passed through a steam chamber to set the dye, washed, oiled, dried and finally rewound. During the rewinding of the textile strands, a twist is imparted to the strands to prevent filament p separation.
