[Also in Division D1] Flocked yarn comprises a central thread of elastomeric material coated with an elastic adhesive and having electrostatically-applied, radially extending flock fibres uniformly distributed thereover and secured by the adhesive. The flocked yarn is produced by unwinding a plurality of threads from individual spools, stretching the threads, coating them with an elastic adhesive, passing the coated threads at reduced tension through a high voltage field produced between a pair of electrodes so that the threads rotate about their longitudinal axes, supplying flock fibres to the field, drying and fixing the adhesive and winding up the flocked yarn in a tension-free manner. Multi- or mono-filament polyurethane elastomer threads are preferred. The fibres may be polyamide, polyester, polyacrylic, cotton fibre dust. The products can be used for the manufacture of lingerie, stockings and filter cloths. Apparatus for manufacturing the flocked yarn comprises, as shown in the Figure, a thread supply spool frame 1, a thread stretching device 2, an adhesive container 3, an electrostatic flocking mechanism 4, a mechanism for supplying the flock comprising a distributor 5 and a conveyor belt 6, a drying and fixing chamber 7, a thread winding spool frame 9 and continuously operable thread advancing devices 10, 11, 12 and 12' and 13, the thread supply and winding spool frames being provided with individual drives which are controllable in dependence upon the thread tension, and a thread advancing device located after the flocking mechanism (rollers 12, 12') being driven at a lower peripheral speed than a thread advancing device located before the flocking mechanism (rollers 10, 11).
