Abstract

Non-woven fabric is made from an "unbonded textile fibre web" in which the fibres lie mostly in one direction by re-orienting the fibres by stretching or contracting the web in a direction normal to the one in which the fibres originally lie, by causing the web to adhere with an endless moving belt comprising an elastic fabric incorporating "naked threads" of rubber or of other elastomeric materials and which is stretched or contracted latually. The expression "unbonded textile fibre web" includes a web which has been treated with a bonding agent without reducing the capacity of the fibres to re-orientate when the web is stretched or contracted. The expression "naked threads of rubber &c." denotes threads which before incorporation or conversion into a fabric have not been covered with textile threads or filaments; a suitable carrier incorporating such threads is made from a fabric comprising warp-knitted 100 denier flat nylon thread and naked rubber threads made up of three 56-count parallel filaments adhesively secured together. The web may comprise fibres of one or more of cotton, rayon, cellulose ester, polyethylene terephthalate, polyamides or acrylies. A web of carded fibres A is fed on to an endless belt 20 of fabric of the kind referred to which is connected at its edges to chains or belts 25, 26 passing over sprockets on shafts 21, 23, the sprockets on shaft 23 being further apart than those on shaft 21. Water, or a solution &c. of a bonding agent, e.g. polyvinyl acetate is fed by a spray 31 on to a wet-out roller 28, the amount of liquid carried along being controlled by adjusting the distance of roller 28 above the belt surface. Excess liquid is removed by a suction box 32, and the web is fed on to an air-oven with or without prior treatment between a pair of print rollers which deposit an emulsion of polyvinyl acetate in defined areas. The web may be stretched by from 100% to 300% of its original width by adjusting the positions of the sprockets on shaft 23, but for large extensions, the angles formed by the edge of the belt with the shaft 21 should be kept at a minimum value by adjusting the distance between the two shafts. A second belt 33 may be superposed to prevent the web slipping on the carrier, in which case no liquid need be used. The stretched web is supported on an inextensible carrier until it has been bonded and dried to prevent longitudinal stresses being set up which would tend to re-orientate the fibres towards their original direction of alignment. The stretching may be carried out in stages by passing the web through a series of units each imparting a proportion of the ultimate stretch desired; also, the stretching of the web can be followed by stretching in a direction at right angles to that of the original stretching so that some of the fibres return to their original orientation.
