Abstract

825,688. Magnetic amplifiers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Oct. 11, 1957 [Oct. 16, 1956], No. 31819/57. Class 40 (9). [Also in Group XXXV] A magnetic amplifier comprises three magnetic cores of which two are saturable, three windings each embracing a different pair of the cores, and a further winding carried by the non-saturable core. As shown in Fig. 1, saturable cores 7, 8 are associated with a control winding 3 and power windings 10a, 10b which are connected with rectifiers 11, 12 in auto-self-excited parallel relationship to an A.C. supply 1, the non- saturable core 6 and its further winding 9 providing a transformer coupling to a load 2. In a modification, Fig. 3, the load 15 and the A.C. supply 23 are interchanged and a unidirectional output is obtained over rectifiers 13, 14. Alternatively a full-wave rectifying bridge comprising elements 27-30 may be used, Fig. 4. A core and winding strutture suitable for any of these embodiments is shown in Fig. 2, and comprises saturable cores 7<1> 8<1> either side of a non-saturable core 6<1>, the windings 3 and 9 being divided into equal portions 3a, 3b and 9a, 9b. Three transducers 34, 342, 343, Fig. 5, each as shown in Fig. 3, may have their further windings 38, 382, 383, connected in delta to a three-phase supply 32 and their output circuits connected over rectifiers such as 42, 43 to a common load 31. In a modification, Fig. 6, the common connection between the windings 53, 54; 532, 542; 533, 543 are brought out to terminals 57 which may be either short-circuited or connected in additive relationship to the three-phase supply. A suitable three-phase core and winding structure is shown in Fig. 7 in which the non- saturable cores are constituted by a spiralwound, three-limbed core structure 60, while the saturable cores such as 69, 70 are supported by windings 67, 68 with each limb of the core structure pertaining to a different phase.
