Abstract

824,952. Grass-cutting machines. McCULLOCH MOTORS CORPORATION. June 26, 1956 [July 18, 1955], No. 19727/56. Class 6(3). Spaced vertical plates 21 are connected to the forward edge of the carriage 10 of a lawn mower (which has four wheels 11), to form channels 22 leading to a shallow cavity 14 beneath the carriage 10 and in which cavity a rotor 17, bearing at least one Z-shaped blade 27, is swung on a vertical shaft 16 by an I.C. engine 21<SP>1</SP>. The horizontal portion of the blade 27 moves just beneath the plates 21 to cut off the grass and the inner portion, which may be vertical, moves contiguously to the inner edges of the plates in order to mince the cuttings. The blades are pivotally mounted, being held out in cutting position by centrifugal force. The rotor 17, shown as an arm, may be a shallow inverted pan. Side walls 32 are formed on the carriage 10 which has plates 21 on its reverse as well as its front edge. Thin disc wheels 35 are carried on outermost plates 21 to support the carriage when a wheel 11 drops into a depression.
