Abstract

A rotary-scythe mower, of the kind having a motor driving a vertical shaft on which are mounted an air-impeller and a cutter within a housing under which the impeller produces an air-pressure sufficient to support the mower in operation, is characterized in that the motor is a series-wound electric motor which drives the shaft through gearing so that the speed of the cutter is less than that of the motor. In one form, the motor is mounted fixedly on the mower-housing and drives the cutter-shaft through a belt-drive, the cutter-shaft being mounted in fixed bearings in the housing and the cutting height being adjustable by the insertion or removal of shims above the cutter. In another form, the cutter, impeller and motor are mounted together on a top plate which can be rotated about the axis of the mower-housing to engage stepped cams between the plate and housing, whereby the cutter-height may be varied.
