[Class 6 (ii).] In a machine for trimming hedges, grass edges, &c. comprising a stationary disc having radial'y projecting fingers on a portion of its periphery and a rotary driven cutter co-operating therewith, the outer extremities of the radial fingers 2 of the stationary disc 1 are spaced within the circle 1<1> forming the edge of the disc. A cover-plate 4 is secured to the disc 1 by studs or bolts 5 spaced inwardly from its edge and is spaced inwardly at 4<1> to provide a gap in which the cutter operates. The rotary cutter 8 has angled cutting edges 8<3> and is secured to a bevel wheel 10 loosely mounted on a fixed axle 6. The cutter 8 may be of the shape shown in Fig. 3. The bevel wheel 10 is driven by a pinion 11 on a shaft 12 which rotates in bearings 13 in the cover-plate 4 and is driven by a flexible shaft rotated by manual or power driving means. The driving means may comprise a petrol or electric motor mounted on a wheeled trolley. An automatic clutch may be inserted in the drive and may comprise a spring- urged member 19, Fig. 4, carried by the bevel wheel 10 and engaging the cutter 8. Alternatively the clutch may be formed of friction discs 18, Fig. 5, in the drive to the shaft 12 or it may be in the form of a slipping-belt drive. Grooves and holes may be provided in the bearings and cover-plate for lubricating purposes.
