Abstract
A catalyst for the preparation of HCN from a gas mixture of CO and NH3 consists of alumina containing 2-10% thoria and 2% sulphate ion. The HCN preparation is carried out at 400-650 DEG C., preferably 550 DEG C., 10-35 atmos., and 5000-20,000 v/v/hr. space velocity. The catalyst is prepared by dissolving thorium nitrate in 10% aqueous ammonium alum solution, and adding ammoniacal water to precipitate the hydroxides, which are dried, and roasted at 650-750 DEG C. The catalyst may be regenerated by cooling, impregnating with dilute H2SO4, and roasting at 650-750 DEG C.
