Abstract

823,146. Suction cleaners. HOOVER Ltd. Nov. 16, 1956 [Nov. 30, 1955], No. 35194/56. Class 8(1). In a handle propelled suction cleaner comprising an upwardly extending filter casing 23, Fig. 1, connected at its lower end to an air inlet 47, Fig. 3, of a motor-fan unit 27 and the main suction nozzle 14 having a rotary agitator 16 so as to be movable therewith during normal cleaning and connected at its upper end with a flexible hose 35 having an opposite end 37 detachably connected to an outlet fitting 18 of the nozzle 14, disconnection of the lower end 37 from the fitting 18 actuates means for rendering the agitator 16 inoperative during an off-the-floor cleaning period. As shown the nozzle 14 is raised so that the agitator is clear of the carpet by withdrawal of the hose connection 38 which has a projection 54 normally moving to hold a spring-urged pivoted cam 50 away from a step 56 on the chassis 10 and which cam when allowed to abut the step effect raising of the nozzle abut a pin 13 and against a spring 41 as shown in Fig. 4. In a modification the cam is activated by movement of a wire ring surrounding the nozzle outlet 18 when released by withdrawal of the hose connection 38. In a further modification the agitator is rendered inoperative by the closing of a closure plate on the fitting 18 ; said closure having a cam extension which when it abuts a step on the chassis raises the nozzle. In a still further modification and instead of raising the nozzle the agitator drive belt 29, Fig. 9, which is normally held taut by an idler pulley 83 at the free end of a spring-biased crank arm 82 is slackened on removal of the hose connection from engagement with a roller 78 of the free end of a crank arm 75 secured to one end of a shaft 76. The other end of shaft 76 carries a crank arm 76<SP>1</SP> connected by a link 78<SP>1</SP> to a further crank arm 79 which is secured to a shaft 80 to which is secured the arm 82.
