Pushers 9a feed double-length stubs S in between alternate ones of cigarettes 2 on a conveyer 1 delivering to a platform 4 between which and a shoe 20 the cigarette immediately preceding each stub S is retarded to ensure its abutment with the stub, the operative pusher 9a being then retracted from the stub as the cigarette is gripped between a wheel 6 and a suction drum 5 feeding at the same rate as the pusher 9a but more slowly than the conveyer 1 which therefore, in conjunction with an even faster feed means in the form of a sponge rubber covered portion 21a of a roller 21, causes the cigarette immediately following the stub also to abut it, the resulting cigarette-stub assemblage passing to a conveyer 7 moving at the speed of the drum 5 and on which a gummed uniting band supplied by the drum 5 is folded and heat-secured around the assemblage which is then divided into two mouthpiece cigarettes. The stubs S are supplied along a guide 8 by an air jet. Each pusher 9a is rigid with a spring- loaded lever 16 pivoted at the free end of an arm 11 itself pivoted on a rotary disc 13, the members 11, 16 having rollers 14, 17 respectively controlled by a fixed cam 15 and a guideway 19 on the disc 13 so that during abutment of a stub with the preceding cigarette the pusher 9a moves in a straight path at constant speed, and so that during this period and that of subsequent retraction from the stub the pusher 9a remains parallel to the stub rear end. The shoe 20 is pivotally mounted and has a tail 27 spring-urged against a cam 28 which lifts the shoe clear of each stub and its following cigarette.
