Abstract

821,649. Metal-vapour converters. LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS G.m.b.H. Aug. 24, 1956 [Aug. 31, 1955], No. 25986/56. Class 39(1). In a single-anode mercury-pool cathode rectifier, with continuous excitation and having the mercury pool 2, Fig. 1, formed in a recess at the bottom of a metal tank 1, the anode 3 is surrounded by a protective tube 5 and the space between the lower edge of this tube and the cathode 2 is surrounded by a basket 7 formed by radially disposed metal strips. This basket 7, which is insulated from the tank 1 and cathode 2, serves as an ion absorber but does not impede the flow of de-ionised mercury vapour to the walls of the tank where it is cooled and condensed. The basket 7 may be of spherical shape to facilitate the passage of the discharge around a baffle plate 10, Fig. 3.
