A multi-core plastic insulated communication cable with a moisture resistant sheath has one or more guard wires each having a non-hydroscopic plastic covering provided with leakage paths at intervals along its length to enable the presence of any moisture which might penetrate the sheath to be detected. The plastic covering may be polythene, the leakage paths being provided by perforations, or by applying the insulation in strip form with gaps between turns, or by applying cellular material in which case it may be extruded and then subjected to a high voltage to cause breakdown and thus provide leakage paths.
