In a flushing cistern 1 for a water closet to be close coupled to and supported from a platform thereof, the base 3 has a recess 13 extending into the cistern I to form a pocket 14, having in its inner end an opening 16 to receive the water discharge pipe and an extension thereof which, when the cistern is close-coupled, are wholly isolated from any water in the cistern 1. The recess 13 may consist of a squat tubular tower, as shown in Fig. 1, or be a trapezoidal pocket extending laterally of the cistern 1 and accessible from the rear thereof, which may extend laterally for any distance up to the entire width of the cistern 1. The cistern and the pocket are preferably made integral in pottery and the pocket may be other than trapezoidal, e.g. rectangular.
