820,641. Transformers. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 22, 1956 [Aug. 25, 1955], No. 25665/56. Class 38 (2) A high-voltage winding 3 for a transformer comprises a plurality of layers which are separated by strips of paper 5 which extend beyond the ends of the layers and are bent round to coincide with the lines of equipotential. In manufacture, the strip lengths are cut from the paper roll across the direction of rolling, i.e. in the direction of maximum extensibility, so that the maximum possible extension of the paper is in the direction of winding of the coil. The ends of the paper are wetted with hot water prior to bending and this is effected by folding or by centrifugal action on rapid rotation. After bending the coil is clamped between formers and vacuum dried at high temperature. The winding may be further strengthened by paper bandages.
