Abstract

A liquid vitamin preparation comprises from 25 to 1500 micrograms % of a cobalamin vitamin, from 10 per cent w/v up to the limit of solubility but not in excess of 62% w/v of a polyhydric alcohol having the formula C6H14O6 and a liquid pharmaceutical vehicle. The preparations are said to provide higher serum levels of cobalamin vitamins than known preparations. Exemplary amongst the alcohols are sorbitol and mannitol. The cobalamin vitamins include cyanocobalamin, hydroxy cobalamin and anhydrous hydroxycobalamin, nitrocobalamin, chlorocobalamin, cobalamin, dicyanocobalamin, thiocyanocobalamin, sulphatocobalamin, sulphitocobalamin and the hydrogen sulphide addition product of cyanocobalamin. Other pharmaceutical agents may be included, e.g. folic acid, inositol, "B" vitamins, caffeine or a salt, betaine, choline, methiomine or ferric iron producing salts, e.g. ferric ammonium citrate, or soluble ferric pyrophosphate. The liquid vehicle is preferably aqueous, and in some cases may contain ethyl alcohol.
