Abstract

1,235,529. Mucolytic compositions. CALIBIOCHEM. 2 Dec., 1968, No. 57019/68. Heading A5B. A medicament for the liquefaction of mucous accumulations in human beings comprises a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier containing 1,4-dimercapto 2,3-dihydroxybutane in amount equal to 0.016‹ to 2.0% by weight of the carrier. The medicament may be administered orally in the form of gelatin capsules or by inhalation of a powder, a spray solution from an atomizer or nebulizer, a solution or powder from an aerosol. The 1,4-dimercapto-2,3-dihydroxybutane may be present as any of its stereo isomers or mixtures thereof. The medicament may be adjusted to a pH of 7.0 or less. The medicament may also contain ephedrine sulphate, chlorcyclizine and chlorobutanol.
