Damage commonly occurs to the swinging arms 10 (Fig. 6), by which dustbins are tipped into a refuse vehicle, when the swinging arms strike an obstruction on the ground as the vehicle moves. To avoid this, according to the invention, the arms have a hinge 11 which yields when the arms strike an obstruction as the vehicle is driven forwardly against the direction of the arrow (Fig. 6) and the lower part 13 of the arms is carried by a hinge 28 which yields if the lower end of the arm strikes an obstruction while the vehicle is being driven rearwardly. Movement about the hinge 28 may be constrained by a frangeable pin, by ball locks, or by a torsion bar spring, while the hinge 11 may be left free or may be controlled by a torsion bar spring. When the tipping apparatus is not in use the arm 10 may be held in the position shown in Fig. 2 by a line 17. The lower portion 13 of the arms has elastic buffers 14 engaging the lower end of a bin carried on a hook 4 (Fig. 2) on the closure 2 of the charging aperture. An elastic pad 27 on the lower portion 13 of the arms 10 bears against the abutment 29 on the arms 10. Movement of the arms 10 about the hinge 11 is limited by an elastic pad 22 (Fig. 4) which engages a fixed abutment plate 21. The tipping arms are driven from the shaft 7 and the initial shock of the bin striking the closure 2 may be reduced by engagement of a horn 6 (Fig. 2) fast on the shaft 7 with a shock-absorbing member 5 on the closure 2.
