Mechanism for tipping dust bins into refuse vehicles comprises a lifting lever and a guide lever, attached to each of a pair of power-operated swing levers to guide the movement of a basket holding the bin. A pair of lifting levers 3, poweroperated by a piston 22 of an hydraulic or pneumatic ram 23 has a bin receiving basket 10 pivotally mounted thereon by lifting levers 6 and guide levers 7 pivoted on each lever 3 and forming a four-point, preferably parallelogram, linkage. A telescopic strut 27, 28 extends between a fixed bracket 30 and a pivot-pin 26 on each lever 6. A plate 31 having a suitable opening for the dust bin is hingeably mounted on a shaft 2 and has behind it dust shields 34, 35. The shield 34 has a tooth 57 for cooperation with the yoke portion 58 of a grip on the bin lid 33. Initial movement of the levers 3 from the position of Fig. 1 to the intermediate position of Fig. 4 exerts a compressive force on the struts 27, 28, holding them fully closed and causing the levers 6, 7 to swing along the paths 60, 61 about the levers 3. On reaching the intermediate position, Fig. 4, the coupling tooth 57 engages the yoke 58 and the plate 31 with its dust shields 34, 35 become entrained with the movement of the basket 10. The telescopic struts 27, 28 are now subjected to tension and extend holding the levers 3, 6, 7 in the same relative position during the final movement of the levers 3. As the final position is approached with the plate 31 on buffers 42, the dust shields 34, 35 and attached lid 33 swing to open the latter and a locking device 43 operates to secure the basket 10 to the plate 31 until the position on the return movement at which the parts 33-35 drop back under gravity.
