[Classes 78 (ii), 78 (iii) and 78 (iv)] Refuse is loaded into the main chamber 15 of a refuse collecting vehicle by a cradle 30 adapted to carry a bin 31 and traversable on inclined guides 28 on the body of the vehicle, the cradle 30 and bin 31 being tipped on reaching the upper ends of the guides so as to push open a flap 19, hinged at 20 to the body, against a spring 21, a gate 25 in the flap then opening by gravity to permit the contents of the bin to fall into the chamber 15. The cradle 30 runs on the guides 28 by means of rollers 29 and is provided at its upper ends with claws 66 which, when the cradle is hoisted, engage trunnions 67 on the lower end of the shutter 19 so that the wire ropes 43 for hoisting the cradle tip it about the trunnions 67 which are so shaped that they will not disengage the claws 66 while the cradle is tipped. The cradle 30 is further guided during tipping by lateral arms 49 to which the ropes 43 are secured and which engage in slots 70 in the hooded loading compartment 16, while the mouth of the bin engages a suitable lip on the shutter 19. Hooks 68 on the cradle engage handles 69 on the bin to hold it in position. The opening in the shutter 19 through which discharge takes place may be shaped to permit passage of the hinge on a bin having a lid. The wire ropes 43 are fastened to pulleys 41 turned by an endless chain 34 reciprocated by a hydraulic ram, electrically or otherwise, and two sets of guides, cradle &c. independently operable by separate rams each controlled by a lever at the corresponding side of the vehicle may be disposed side by side on a rear door 12 of a vehicle, the door being hinged at 14 to permit discharge of the chamber 15. A load spreading member 65 is operated by endless ropes 51 simultaneously with each cradle.
