Abstract

764,304. Refuse vehicles; raising and tipping bins. SHELVOKE & DREWRY, Ltd. Feb. 1, 1954 [Oct. 31, 1952], No. 27412/52. Class 78 (4). A bin 38 is tipped to discharge into the body 16 of a refuse vehicle as the body tips forwardly about trunnions 18 to trim the load. The body may also be tipped rearwardly about a pivot 14 to discharge the load, and the loading opening is accessible for manual discharge of bins. As illustrated the lifting rail 36 of the bin engages in hooks 34 on a pair of arms 32 carried by the same shaft 30 on the rear door 24 as a pair of arms 58 and normally resting against buffers 60. The arms 58 are engaged by rollers on the ends of levers 52 which, as the body 16 tilts about its trunnions 18, are turned against the bias of springs 54 by cables 40 anchored at points 42 on a sub-frame 12. The bin is thus tilted into engagement with a sealing device similar to that described in Specification 764,305 and forming the face of a hood 46. The velocity ratio of the tipping mechanism is such that the bin is completely inverted when the body 16 has been turned into a vertical position. As. the bin is tipped latches 76 pivoted at 78 to the arms 32 and connected by links 80 to the door close the hooks 34. The bin is prevented from turning through more than 180 degrees by a hook 82 suspended within the hood 46 by chains 84 and springs 86 in position to engage the upper side of the mouth of the bin. The hood 46 may be raised about its hinge 63 to permit bins to be discharged manually over a sill 48 defining the lower margin of the loading opening in the rear door 24. The body 16 is turned about its trunnions 18 by a ram 22 which also serves, when a bolt described in Specification 679,362, [Group XXXII], is released, to tip the body 16 and the sub-frame 12 together about the pivot 14 to discharge the load. During this action the hood 46 and rear door 24 are automatically opened by cables 72, 66 passing over cams 74, 68 and connected by springs 70, 44 to anchorages on the body.
