A pair of arms 12, Fig. 1, each mounted for limited pivotal movement on an arm 9 turned by power about an axis 5 on a refuse vehicle, serve to engage and lift a bin 18 until a bracket 23 on it engages a member 24 on the vehicle to tip the bin and discharge its contents into the vehicle. As the bin, which carries trunnions 16 engaged by means on the arms 12, is raised a pawl 12a on each arm 12 engages a stop 13 on the corresponding arm 9 so that the arms 9 and 12 move together; when however the bracket 23 engages the member 24 the resultant tipping motion of the bin causes the arms 12 to pivot relatively to the arms 9 to provide a rapid tipping motion. When a bin is to be lifted links 19 are swung about their pivots on the ends of the arms 12 into the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 2, in which slots 21 in the links engage the trunnions 16. As the arms 9 are subsequently raised by rams 6, Fig. 1, slots 14 in the arms 12 engage the trunnions 16 which are held captive by the links 19, withdrawal of which is prevented by pins 17 on the bin which engage the surfaces of curved heads 20 on the links. Slots 15 in the arms 12 prevent interference between the pins 17 and the arms 12 during the tipping motion. Each arm 12 comprises a pair of spaced plates between which the corresponding link 19 is pivoted. The arms 12 may be folded beneath the rear of the vehicle as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, the arms 19 being then supported by pins 25 which engage within the slots 14.
