[Classes 78 (iii) and 78 (iv)] In means for loading loose materials into a vehicle a carrier for a dustbin or similar container is mounted between vertical guides along which it is moved by traversing mechanism connected to the carrier by a flexible connector 29 engaging with the profile of a tension transmitting member 30 on the carrier, stops being provided to arrest the motion when the carrier reaches the upper ends of the guides, whereupon during continued operation of the traversing mechanism the flexible connector, while progressively disengaging itself from the profile of the transmitting member, causes the carrier together with the dustbin to be tipped. In an arrangement for two dustbins to be emptied simultaneously, the dustbin 12 is supported by a carrier 13, 14, 15 with hooks 16 or spring- loaded catches for engaging the handles 17. The carrier is raised by trunnions 22 running in guides 21 as a pair of arms 23 pivotally mounted in brackets on each side of the filling opening are rotated by a jack 26. A rod 28 and chain 29 connects each arm 23 with pulley guides 30 mounted eccentrically with respect to the trunnions. Continued operation of the jacks when the carrier reaches the top of the guides causes tipping initiated by rollers 33 mounting a ramp on the vehicle, the movement being progressively accelerated. The filling opening has a shutter hinged to'a plate hinged to the vehicle, the shutter closing an aperture in the plate. A projection on the dustbin lid engages a recess in the hinged shutter and as the dustbin is inverted the plate is swung downwards and the shutter upwards with the lid. To ensure completely emptying the dustbin, it is shaken by means of springs interposed between arms @23 and rods 28 and buffers on the vehicle body which when engaged by the shutter plate or rim of the dustbin load and under the slow action of the jack gives a shaking movement to the dustbin. For returning the dustbin to its initial position an arm or bracket projecting from the plate is secured to the upper end of a return spring secured to the body so that on the return stroke of the jack, the plate will become vertical and the dustbin returns to its original position. The loading unit may be made as a separate unit mounted on a trolley.
