Description
Patented Apr. 12, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application May 22,
1936, Serial No. 81,212
' In Italy May 25, 1935 1 Claim.
This invention relates to the transportation of refuse and has for its object to provide an arrangement whereby the refuse is collected and conveyed in a highly hygienic manner.
According to the inventio refuse bins are manually conveyed to a refuse vehicle provided with members depending from the side of said vehicle, on to which the refuse bins are connected, and means are associated with the refuse vehicle, whereby the refuse bins are elevated, inverted over an opening in the refuse vehicle, said opening being provided with a removable cover, which latter opens simultaneously with the movement of the refuse bins, whereby the refuse is caused to fall on to a conveyer arranged in the refuse vehicle so that, the refuse will be distributed evenly in said vehicle.
After the refuse bin has been emptied, the sequence of operations as herein set forth is reversed, and when the mechanism on the refuse vehicle is again at its normal position, the refuse bins are then removed from the members.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Figs. l and 2 are perspective Views of the mechanism used for elevating and emptying the refuse from the refuse bin into the refuse vehicle, and, Fig. 3 is a side view partly in section of a part of the refuse vehicle.
A pinion I xed on to the end of a horizontal shaft 2 rotatably mounted in the refuse vehicle 4U engages with a pinion 3 which is driven from the driving shaft 4| of the motor by means of pulleys 6 and as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
A crank arm 4 is nxed to an axle 21 which in turn is connected to two curved levers 2| Fig. l provided with an arm 22 carrying a counterweight The levers 2| are articulated to an arm |5 to which the refuse bin I6 is connected by means of trunnions I8 engagingV bayonet slots as shown in Fig. 1.
A conveyer I0 with blades 2B is arranged within a cylinder Il provided with inwardly extending iins I9, whereby the refuse on being emptied automatically into the vehicle is transported along the conveyer Ill and finally discharged into the f vehicle container 40.
Figs. 2 and 3 show forms of producing the oscillating movement of the crank arm 4. The link 51 is articulated at 61 to the disc 611 of the pini-on on the end of the conveyer shaft 2.
After the refuse bin has been placed in position, the main driving shaft 4| is then driven from the motor vehicle causing the bin to be raised its contents tipped into the vehicle container 40, and then lowered and manually removed. When the refuse bin is elevated the closure I8 to the opening to the refuse Vehicle moves between guides I4 by means of an arm 20 integral with a lever 2|. If desired the said closure may consist of textile or like material.
When the refuse vehicle is full, it can be tipped, and after the refuse is discharged, the container is swung back to its normal position.
By this invention the refuse is collected and transported without exposure to the surrounding atmosphere.
I claim:
A refuse vehicle comprising a refuse container with an opening in the top, a slidable cover fitted to said container for closing the opening therein, a short cylinder provided with radial guides and a peripheral opening mounted longitudinally in said container, the peripheral opening in alignment with the opening in said container, a short screw conveyer rotatably mounted within said cylinder, a pair of articulated levers pivotally mounted on said container, and means for imparting oscillating movement to said levers whereby, said levers on moving in one direction elevate a refuse bin, move said cover off the opening in the container so that the refuse can be automatically discharged through the opening in said container and cylinder respectively on to the screw conveyer and radial guides of said cylinder, directed into the container, and on the reverse movement automatically slide the cover over the opening in said container and lower the refuse bin.
